Mechanical Drawing, which beginsin the first term, consists of projections, intersections of solids byplanes, line-shading, lettering and figuring, and tracing; thefinished plates, being neatly bound, and one turned over to the de-partment at the end of the year. Sophomore Class—Mechanical Course.—Physics is taughtto all students during the first half of the sophomore year. Ele-mentary principles are given thoroughly and illustrated by experi-ment in the following order: Mechanics, heat, electricity and mag-netism, Bound and light. Especial attention is given to motion,energy, electricity and magnetism. The whole subject is adaptedpractically to the needs of the courses which follow in the juniorand senior years, and leaves the student prepared for laboratory ex-perimentfl and for the study of electrical engineering. Mechanical drawing begins in the first term and continues forfour hours weekly throughout the year. It consists of thorough andaccurate reproduction of approved practical drawings and is fol-lowed by sketches from machine tools in the shops. These sketchesare to be subsequently used in the draughting rooms for makingneatly finished, line-shaded, detail drawings in ink. The object ofthis work is to give an opportunity to the student to become familiarwith the common machine tools and their construction, and to givehim further practice in the manipulation of his drawing instru-ments. The second and third terms are spent in making generalviews and the necessary detail drawings of a small steam engine orother machine, from pencil sketches furnished by the department.
